Pirate women hold off PLU 64-56

SPOKANE, Wash. – Kimberly Dewey scored 28 points to lead Whitworth to a 64-56 win over visiting Pacific Lutheran in a Northwest Conference women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

The Pirates won a second straight conference game to improve to 6-10 overall and 3-4 in the NWC.  The Bucs, who have won consecutive NWC contests for the first time this season, could even their conference record by knocking off Puget Sound on Sunday afternoon.

PLU (9-7 overall, 1-6 NWC) took a 16-11 lead six minutes into the first quarter on a driving layup by Emi Wada.  Whitworth responded to go ahead 21-19 at the end of the first on a jumper by Dewey in the final seconds.  The Pirates continued to stretch the lead in the second quarter and went to halftime with their first double digit lead (37-27) after Dewey hit a three-pointer from the corner in the final seconds.  Dewey had 16 points at halftime.

Whitworth took its largest lead late in the third quarter when Zalissa Sanfo hit a short jumper from Dewey's assist.  PLU rallied in the fourth quarter to get within three on two occasions, the final time when Ashley Akamine drove for a layup with 2:14 to play to cut the margin to 59-56.  Mya Edwards hit a tough jumper in the paint to answer for the Bucs with 1:13 to play and the Lutes would not score again.  Whitworth finished 6-8 from the free throw line in the final minute.

Dewey added eight rebounds, four assists and four steals to her scoreline.  Sanfo and Edwards added 12 points apiece for the Pirates.  Whitworth finished the game making 24 of 61 (39%) from the field, 4-19 (21%) from beyond the arc.  The Bucs forced 17 PLU turnovers.

No Lute reached double figures.  Raylie Wardenaar led PLU with eight points.  The Lutes made 21 of 57 (37%) from the field, 4-17 (23.5%) from beyond the arc.
