SPOKANE, Wash. – Alison Ball anchored Whitworth's 4x100 relay team to a school record, then set an individual team mark of her own on Wednesday afternoon and evening at the Whitworth Last Chance meet, highlighting several outstanding performances by the Bucs.
The Pirate quartet of Jordyn Lungo, Amelia Hewson, Margaret Byle and Ball won the 400-meter relay with a time of 47.07, over six-tenths faster than the previous school record of 47.68 set in 2003. That time moves Whitworth into 13th place in the current NCAA Division III performance list.
Ball won the 200-meter dash with a Pirate team record time of 25.02, breaking the old mark of 25.04 set by Kristen Shields in 2004.
Hewson went on to win the 100-meter hurdles with a season-best mark of 14.32. Bree Rawls finished second with a personal record time of 15.78.
Lungo won the women's 100-meter dash with a time of 12.74.
Whitworth's women also dominated the throwing events on Wednesday. Lauryn Rawls won the discus with a personal record of 151'-10" that moved her to seventh place on the DIII performance list. Amblessed Okemgbo was second with her own PR of 142'-8", which is 23rd on the DIII list.
AbbieJo Carlson won the hammer throw with her personal record distance of 170'-4", which now puts her 23rd on the DIII list.
Renee Tiumalu (43'-5.75") and Logan Spencer (36'-10.25") finished first and second, respectively, in the shot put. Eva Millan won the javelin throw with a mark of 132'-9".
Solo Hines swept the sprint races to led the Whitworth men, while Ignacio Garcia hit a PR in the men's hammer throw.
Hines won the 100 dash in 10.85 and the 200 dash in 21.70. His 200 time was only one-tenth off his personal record.
The Pirate men had the top five finishers in the 800-meter run, including three under two minutes. Adam Callahan (1:54.25) won with Kainoa Figueira (1:55.21) finishing second. Isaac Akiyama finished third with a PR of 1:58.51.
Like the women, the Whitworth men won all four throwing events, led by Garcia's PR in the hammer throw of 176'-6". Luke Davis (155'-10") and Eddie Vu (150'-3") finished first and second, respectively, in the discus. Cody Wheeler won the javelin with a mark of 212'-3", while Kenai Herrick (44'-9.75") won the shot put.
The Pirates will send several athletes to the Portland Carnival this weekend. Field events will take place on Friday afternoon at George Fox, while running events will be held on Saturday at Lewis & Clark College.
