SPOKANE, Wash. – One of the fastest women's 4x100 relay times in school history highlighted the efforts of the home team athletes on Thursday at the 2023 Whitworth Twilight track & field meet.
Jordyn Lungo, Amelia Hewson, Margaret Byle and Alison Ball got the baton around the track in a time of 47.87, which is less than two-tenths of a second off the school record time of 47.68 set in 2003. It is the fastest mark in the Northwest Conference this season and currently ranks 10th in NCAA Division III.
Hewson went on to win the women's 100-meter hurdles in a season-best time of 14.39. She was second in the 100-meter dash in 12.49, just off her season-best mark.
Madelyn Buckley just missed a season-best while finishing second in the women's 800-meter run with a time of 2:19.73.
The Pirate women got a pair of field events wins. AbbieJo Carlson won the hammer throw with a season-best distance of 160'-4". Devyn Cope won the long jump (16'-7.25").
Whitworth's depth in the throwing events showed in the shot put and discus. Renee Tiumalu was the runner-up in the shot with her second-best career throw of 43'-2.25". Logan Spencer (37'-1.75") was third and Amblessed Okemgbo (36'-5.75") was fourth. Lauryn Rawls finished second in the discus with a distance of 136'-1" with Okemgbo taking third (130'-7").
There were several season-best marks on the men's side as well, including the men's 4x100 relay. Dante Stokes, Dylan Pratt, Logan Wright and Solo Hines finished in 42.40, a season-best time for the Bucs.
Zaanan Bane had season-best times in both the 110-meter hurdles (15.66) and 400 hurdles (59.88). His time in the 110 distance is the second-best in the Northwest Conference so far this season.
Adam Callahan went 1:55.99 in the 800-meter run to earn a season-best time.
Riley Flanagan won the long jump with his season-best distance of 22'-0.75".
Whitworth went 1-2-3 in the men's shot put. Reed Hurst won with a mark of 46'-8.25", with Luke Davis second (45-10) and Kenai Herrick third (45-8.5).
Eddie Vu posted a season-best distance of 150'-4" with his runner-up place in the discus. Davis was second (144-11) and Hurst was third (144-9).
Ignacio Garcia (165'-4") was runner-up in the men's hammer throw.
The Pirates will now turn their attention to the 2023 Northwest Conference Outdoor Championships, which will take place April 21-22 at Willamette University in Salem, Ore.
