SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth women's tennis team rolled to an 8-1 win over a short-handed Puget Sound squad on Sunday in the Pirates' Northwest Conference home opener.
Whitworth won its fourth consecutive match to improve to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the NWC. The Loggers, who were playing with only four players, fell to 0-5, 0-3.
The teams split the two contested doubles matches. The Pirate #2 pair of Natalie Budge and Elizabeth Hopkins ran past their UPS opponents 8-1. At #1 doubles, Paige Shinall and Marissa Paige of UPS edged Whitworth's Gracie Smyley and Meredith Bedford 8-6.
The Pirates won all four contested singles contests. Smyley got the best of Shinall 6-1, 6-1 at #1, while Budge defeated Perez 6-2, 6-3 at #2.
Olivia Corbett topped Zoe Richter 6-1, 6-4 at #3 singles and Kara Nelson shut out Annie Vandenberg 6-0, 6-0 at #4 singles.
Whitworth will travel to play at Linfield and Lewis & Clark in conference contests next weekend.
