Baseball falls in series finale at Willamette

SALEM, Ore. – Whitworth lost 11-1 in the final game of a Northwest Conference series at Willamette University on Monday at John Lewis Field.

Whitworth fell to 6-17 overall, and 3-9 in Northwest Conference play while Willamette improved to 15-7 overall and 10-5 in conference.

Willamette's Ethan Fischel went 2-4 with four RBI's and a three-run home run.

Fischel drove in the first run of the game in the third inning with a sacrifice fly to center field. Willamette tacked on three more runs in the fourth inning and two runs in fifth inning to extend their lead 6-0.

The Bucs scored their sole run of the game in the sixth inning when Henry Zaske singled to left center scoring Jacob Doughty.

In the bottom half of the sixth inning, Fischel responded with a three-run home run to left center. The Bearcats tacked on two additional runs in the eighth inning to power past the Pirates with a final score of 11-1.

Steven Verespey (1-2) started for the Bearcats and allowed just one run and six hits in 5.2 innings.

Jack Leary (L, 0-1) made his first start of the season for Whitworth allowing one run on two hits in three innings. Four different Pirates threw the remaining five innings, giving up a collective ten runs on eight hits.

Elijah Tanner led Whitworth with three hits in his four at bats.
