Boxers edge Pirate lacrosse with late rally

FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Pacific University scored the final three goals, including the match-winner with nine seconds to play, to hand visiting Whitworth a 10-9 setback in a Northwest Conference women's lacrosse match on Saturday afternoon.

The Boxers (5-7 overall, 2-6 NWC) avenged an earlier loss to the Pirates (3-7, 2-5) this season.

Whitworth jumped out to a 3-0 lead only five minutes into the match on goals by Sierra Witte, Megan Whitman and Anna Chase.  After Pacific got back within 3-2, the Pirates ended the first quarter with a 4-2 lead on a goal by Kenzie Hemman.

The Boxers tied the match with the only two goals of the second quarter.  Devyn Davis and Mia White each scored their second goal of the game in the second period.

Whitworth appeared to retake control by scoring three of the next four goals.  Whitman scored her second early in the third from an assist by Liliann Penfield.  Hemman made it 6-5 in favor of the Bucs with an unassisted goal while Whitworth was a player down.  Irwin scored her second with the Pirates a player up with 12 second left in the third.

When Nikki Beers scored her first of the match, from an assist by Chase, less than a minute into the fourth quarter, Whitworth had an 8-5 lead.  Neither team scored again until under six minutes remained in the match, but Pacific got two quick goals, including another by White, to pull within 8-7.

Whitman scored her third of the match with 2:52 to go to put the Pirates ahead 9-7, but that wasn't quite enough to hold off the Boxers.  Billie Merrian scored two of the final three goals, including the match-winner from an assist by White, with nine seconds left.

Pacific outshot Whitworth 26-16, including a 16-13 edge in shots on goal.  Sage Fosnock made six saves for Whitworth.

The Pirates will try to bounce back and end a six-match losing skid when the Pirates play at Linfield on Sunday afternoon.
