Vasiloff tosses two-hitter as Pirates split with Panthers

ORANGE, Calif. – Corinne Vasiloff tossed a two-hit shutout to lead visiting Whitworth to a win in the opener, but host Chapman scored six runs in the third inning of the second game in a split of a non-conference softball doubleheader on Saturday at El Camino Park.

The Pirates (8-9) ended a three-game losing skid with the 5-0 win in the opener.  The Panthers (12-6) won the nightcap 8-3.

Whitworth will play a doubleheader at Occidental on Sunday.

Game 1 – Whitworth 5, Chapman 0
Vasiloff had a one-hitter through six innings and completely controlled the Panthers' lineup throughout, while Reagan Ellis went 3 for 3 and Julia Dillon drove in two runs.

The Pirates jumped ahead 3-0 in the first inning.  Dillon doubled home the first two runs and then scored on Jazz Johnson's sacrifice fly.

Haley Montoya added an RBI single in the fourth inning for a 4-0 lead.  Johnson scored the final fun on a Chapman fielding error in the top of the sixth.

Vasiloff (6-4) allowed a single in the second and a double in the seventh.  She struck out six batters and walked only one.

Jillian Kelly (3-2) started for the Panthers and took the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits in five innings.  She had seven strikeouts with no walks.

Game 2 – Chapman 8, Whitworth 3
The game was tied 1-1 in the third when the Panthers scored six times for a 7-1 lead.  The Pirates prevented Chapman from ending the game on the eight-run rule in the fifth after the Panthers had a run in and the bases loaded.

After the Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the second, Whitworth tied the game with Montoya's second sacrifice fly of the day in the top of the third.

Chapman broke the game open with six runs in the bottom of the third.  Taylor Cruz had a three-run double and Emily Hayes followed with an RBI double one batter later.

The Panthers had a run in and runners on second and third with none out in the bottom of the fifth, one run away from ending the game on the eight-run rule. They then had the bases loaded with one out, but Vasiloff, on in relief, got out of the jam without further damage.

Mattea Nelson tripled home Whitworth's second run in the sixth inning and then scored on Dillon's ground ball to second base.  Neither team scored again.

Anjali Lauwers (6-1) started in the circle for Chapman.  She limited the Pirates to five hits while striking out 10 and walking two.

Momi Lyman (2-4) started for the Pirates and gave up five runs on five hits and four walks in 3.1 innings.  She struck out five.  Vasiloff finished and allowed three runs on six hits.
