SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth track and field teams posted more outstanding performances on Thursday and Friday during the Buc Scoring Meet at Boppell Track.
The Pirate men got eight team-best marks for 2023, while the women hit five team-best marks for the spring.
Daniel Watts competed in the decathlon over the two days and finished with a score of 5,583. His best of the ten events was the long jump, in which he finished second and posted a team-best mark of 21'-4".
Cody Wheeler was the only individual winner for the Pirate men. He threw the javelin 198'-6".
Reed Hurst tossed the shot put 47'-9.75" to finish fourth in that event, while Luke Davis went 147'-5" in the discus to take fifth. Both have the best marks of the season in those events for the Bucs. Davis was also fifth in the hammer throw (160'-2").
Whitworth had a couple of strong distance races, including Alex Peters in the 10,000 meters on Friday. He went a team-best time of 32:43.79. James Dugenet posted a team-best mark of 9:56.25 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Friday. Both Pirates were the runners-up in their respective events.
Kainoa Figueira was the runner up in the men's 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.23.
Zaanan Bane sprinted to a 16.04 to take fourth place in the men's 110-meter high hurdles. He also posted a mark of 20'-4.5" in the long jump (sixth) and 43'-7.25" in the triple jump (third place).
Whitworth's men got season-best marks in both relays, including a time of 44.63 in the 4x100 from Samson Irish-Lodge, Kyle Ditter, Logan Wright and Levi Wood.
The Pirate women's 4x100 relay of Jordyn Lungo, Amelia Hewson, Margaret Byle and Alison Ball finished third with a season-best time of 44.57.
Hewson went on to win the 100-meter dash in 12.61, as Whitworth had three of the top four finishers. Lungo was runner up in 12.67 and Ball was fourth (12.72). Ball also finished fourth in the 200-meter dash (25.99). Hewson finished third in the 100-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 14.60.
Madelyn Buckley had two season-best times for the Pirates. She finished seventh in a strong field in the 800-meters with a time of 2:23.80. She was also in a strong 1,500 field and went 4:47.06 (11th place).
Eva Millan had the best javelin throw of the spring for the Bucs, reaching 124'-3" to finish sixth.
Lauryn Rawls won the discus throw for the third time this spring with a distance of 141'-10", only one inch short of her season-best mark.
Devyn Cope finished third in both the long jump (16'-7.25") and triple jump (34'-3"), just off each season-best mark.
The Pirates will return to action on April 1st at the Pacific University Open in Forest Grove, Oregon.
