Pirates post top marks during debut of new Boppell Track

SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth University celebrated the debut of its new Boppell track with outstanding performances throughout the lineup at the Sam Adams Classic on Saturday afternoon.

Alison Ball and Amelia Hewson led the Pirate women's sprinters, while Solo Hines won two events for the men.  Renee Tiumalu, Lauryn Rawls and Abbie Jo Carlson continued to impress with their throws, while the Whitworth men's jumpers and throwers posted several season-best marks.

Ball and Hewson posted the same time in the women's 100-meter dash with a mark of 12.47.  Hewson was awarded first place based on a judge's decision.  Hewson went on to finish second in the 100-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 14.78 and Ball won the 200-meter dash in 25.69, also a season-best mark.  Hewson and Ball teamed up with Jordyn Lungo and Margaret Byle to post a time of 48.56 in the 4x100 meter relay.

Lauryn Rawls and Amblessed Okemgbo went 1-2 in the women's discus throw.  Rawls posted a mark of 144'-11", which could end the weekend as the top mark in NCAA Division III.  Okemgbo threw 133'-00".  Renee Tiumalu tossed the shot put 44'-2", a distance that also could lead NCAA DIII after the weekend.  Abbie Jo Carlson won the hammer throw with a mark of 159'-1", her second win of the season in that event.

Breanne Rawls and Monica Kaylor tied for first place in the women's high jump, clearing 5'-0.5".

Solo Hines swept first place in both the men's 100-meter dash (10.83) and the 200-meter dash (21.70).  Both are career-best marks for Hines. 

The Pirate men got several strong second place finishes in the track meet.  Andrew Doughty went 51.36 in the 400-meter dash.  Kainoa Figueira ran a 1:55.20 in the 800-meter run.  Daniel Watts cleared the 400-meter hurdles in 56.57.

Out in the field, Luke Davis and Reed Hurst finished first and second, respectively, in the men's shot put.  Davis tossed the shot 47'-0.25", while Hurst posted a 46'-11" mark.  Ignacio Garcia won the men's hammer throw with a distance of 17'-0". 

Samson Irish-Lodge posted a distance of 43'-9" and Zaanan Bane went 43'-3.75" to finish second and third, respectively, in the men's triple jump. 

Whitworth will stay at home next week, hosting the Buc Scoring and Combined Events Meet on Thursday and Friday.
