Whitman outpaces the Pirates 18-9

SPOKANE, Wash. – Visiting Whitman outscored Whitworth in every quarter on the way to an 18-9 win over the Pirates in a Northwest Conference women's lacrosse match on Wednesday afternoon at the Whitworth Pine Bowl.

The Blues improved to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the NWC while the Pirates (3-2, 2-1) suffered their first conference loss of the season.  Madeleine Sherry scored eight goals for Whitman.

The Blues scored the first four goals of the match, including two by Sherry, to take a 4-0 lead nine minutes in.  Liliann Penfield and Anna Chase scored to pull Whitworth within 5-2 at the end of the quarter.

Chase and Kenzie Hemman scored the first two goals of the second period to get the Bucs within 5-4 at the halfway point.  Sherry ended the run with her third goal and added a goal in the final ten seconds to give Whitman an 8-4 lead at the break.

Rebecca Irwin scored the first goal of the third quarter to pull the Pirates within three, but that is as close as Whitworth would get.  Whitman tallied the next five goals, including one by Sherry, to open a 13-5 lead.  The Pirates got goals from Caitlin Smith and Hemman to trail 13-7 after three.

Sherry scored three more times in the fourth, with her final goal coming on a fast break with a second to play in the game.  Smith and Hemman scored in the final period for Whitworth.

Hemman finished with three goals and an assist for the Pirates.

Whitman outshot Whitworth 47-34, including a 32-26 edge in shots on-goal.  Korin Wheaton made 17 saves for the Blues while Hannah Lew stopped 14 shots for the Pirates.
