Baseball loses finale at CLU on Sunday

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif – Whitworth dropped the final game of a non-conference three-game series against California Lutheran by a score of 5-2 on Sunday.

The Pirates fell to 3-8 after going 0-4 on their trip to the Southern California. The Kingsmen improved to 4-2.

California Lutheran's pitching kept the Pirates offense at bay, led by Luke Wechsler.  Wechsler started and allowed no runs on five hits in 6.2 innings.

The Kingsman got on the board on a two-run double from Brendan Durfee, followed by an RBI single from Joseph Scalzo in the bottom of the first. The Kingsman struck again in the bottom of the fourth when Josh Quinn tripled to right center, extending the Kingsman's lead 4-0.  The Kingsmen tacked on one more run in the seventh inning after Max Heverly drew a bases loaded walk.

The Pirates showed signs of life in the ninth inning after a CLU error led to two unearned runs.

Hunter Dryden pitched 6.1 innings for the Pirates, allowing five runs and ten hits. Aidan Smith threw 1.2 innings of hitless relief.

Six Pirates were able to record a hit in the game.

The Pirates will travel to Walla Walla to start Northwest Conference play against Whitman (6-2) on Saturday.
