SPOKANE, Wash. – Quinn Steckbauer scored 24 points including five threes as Wisconsin-Oshkosh outlasted Whitworth 79-68 at the Whitworth Fieldhouse in the first ever meeting between the two programs.
Jake Holtz scored 16 points to lead Whitworth (5-2 overall, 2-0 NWC) and Sullivan Menard recorded a season-high 12 rebounds. JoJo Anderson finished with 12 points and six assists in his return from a one-game absence, but the Pirates came up short at home.
Whitworth shot 39% from the field and 8-21 from behind the arc, but it was not enough to match the Titans who buried 15 threes at a 49.2% clip.
With 12:35 left to go and the game tied 54-54, Oshkosh (5-1) put the game on ice with a 21-4 run over the next eight minutes. Steckbauer contributed eight points during the run with buckets on three straight possessions at one point.
The game featured 11 lead changes and four ties and was back-and-forth for most of the night with each side feeling each other out. Whitworth's largest lead was 6-0 after Holtz and Twenge knocked down threes on Whitworth's first two possessions, but the Pirates trailed 41-36 at half.
The Pirates outrebounded the Titans 43-35 and tacked on 16 assists. Nine Pirates scored throughout the night, but they couldn't manage to overcome that long dry spell in the second half.
Oshkosh will play Whitman on Saturday night; the Pirates also return to action Saturday night against UC Santa Cruz before traveling to Honolulu on Dec. 21-22.
