Tigers pull away from Pirate women 75-57

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Occidental pulled away from Whitworth in the fourth quarter for a 75-57 victory over the visiting Pirates in a non-conference women's basketball game on Wednesday afternoon at Rush Gymnasium.

The Pirates (3-7) had closed to within 52-48 early in the fourth quarter before the Tigers (7-1) pulled away to the final margin.

The first half saw the Tigers pull out to several leads and the Pirates would respond to the runs.  After Oxy jumped ahead 8-3, Whitworth tied the game 8-8 on a three-pointer by Mya Edwards.  The Tigers led 15-11 after one quarter and opened a 21-16 advantage 3:30 into the second after a basket by Toni Thompson.  The Pirates tied the game when Edwards made two free throws, but Occidental answered with a 9-0 run over the next three minutes.  Zalissa Sanfo drained a three-pointer from the corner with two seconds left in the half to pull the Bucs within 30-24.  Whitworth made 30% (8-26) from the field in the first half, but held a 25-17 edge in rebounds.  The Tigers forced 12 first half Pirate turnovers with their pressing attack.

Cheyenne Rodgers scored to get the Pirates within 40-35 just over three minutes into the third.  Occidental took a 48-40 lead on Amaia McCoy's three-point play with 2:37 to go and led by as many as nine points before the Bucs got back within 49-44 on another Edwards basket.  The Tigers led 51-44 at the end of three periods.

Sydney McLean hit two free throws to pull Whitworth within 52-48 just over a minute into the fourth quarter.  Occidental answered with a 12-2 run, taking a 64-50 lead on Toni Thompson's three-pointer with just under five minutes left.  The Pirates were unable to stop the momentum thanks to 3-17 shooting (18%) in the final period.

Zalissa Sanfo posted her second double-double of the week with 17 points and 13 rebounds.  She also blocked four shots.  Dewey added 11 points and Edwards had 10 for Whitworth.

The Bucs finished the game 18-61 from the field (29.5%) and ended with 21 turnovers.

Thompson scored 38 points to lead Occidental, making 14 of 23 from the field, including 3-4 from three-point range.  She added 11 rebounds.

The Pirates will conclude their swing through Southern California with a game at Chapman on Thursday afternoon.
