WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Kimberly Dewey poured in a career-high 27 points to lead Whitworth to a season-opening 70-57 women's basketball win over Sul Ross State on Friday evening at the Kim Evanger Raney Classic, hosted by Whitman College.
Dewey got to the free throw line 13 times and made a dozen.
The Lobos started quickly, taking an 8-1 lead on a basket by Morgan Peralez. The Pirates outscored SRS 19-6 over the rest of the quarter, taking a 20-14 lead after one period. Dewey had eight points in the opening quarter.
The Lobos started fast again in the second, scoring 11 straight points to go ahead 25-20 on a pair of free throws by Marley Rokas. Cheyenne Rodgers stopped the run with a three-pointer for the Bucs. The Pirates trailed 29-23, the largest deficit of the game, before closing the second quarter with a 15-3 run. Dewey scored eight straight points during that run, helping Whitworth take a 38-32 lead at halftime.
The Pirates were the ones to start fast in the third, going ahead 45-32 with seven straight points. The Lobos fought back to within 47-41 with a 9-2 run before both teams went cold over the final five minutes of the period. Whitworth led 54-45 at the end of the third quarter. Zalissa Sanfo had five points and three rebounds in the period for the Pirates.
The Bucs took control at the start of the fourth with eight straight points, taking a 62-45 lead on a three-pointer by Alyssa Fitzgerald. Sul Ross State was never able to cut the margin below double digits the rest of the way.
Dewey added seven rebounds to her scoring total. Fitzgerald scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds. Sanfo came within a rebound of a double-double in her Pirate debut. The first-year player had 10 points, nine boards and three blocks. Whitworth made 37% from the field and was 17 of 21 (81%) from the free throw line.
Peralez had 16 points and 13 rebounds, Chayanne Bonilla added 13 points. The Lobos shot only 27.6% from the field, including 1-12 from three-point range.
Whitworth will take on UC Santa Cruz on Saturday to conclude Whitman's opening tournament.
