SPOKANE, Wash- Justin Allen scored 25, Buckley DeJardin added 23 including a key bucket in the final minute, and Carnagie Mellon held off Whitworth 89-82 on Friday night at the Whitworth Fieldhouse in the first meeting between the schools.
The Tartans (2-0) shot 60% from the field in the second half and used a pair of runs to pull off a tough road victory. CMU trailed 53-52 with 12:35 to go but an 11-0 run over the next 2:10 to put them in the lead for good. Aidan Murphy fueled the run with an and-one four-point play, DeJardin knocked down a pull up jumper before RJ Holmes buried a wide open three to give CMU a 63-53 lead with 10:46 remaining. With 4:12 to go, Allen finished a dunk in traffic to cap a 13-5 run that put the Tartans up 81-68, but the Pirates fought back.
Jake Holtz sparked the Pirates' run with buckets on consecutive possessions before Jerry Twenge buried three straight threes to pull Whitworth to 85-82 with 47 seconds to go. JoJo Anderson nearly came up with a steal to get possession back for Whitworth, but CMU was awarded a timeout much to the dismay of the fieldhouse crowd.
DeJardin capitalized, finishing a contested layup with 22 seconds left to put the game out of reach.
Anderson led Whitworth (0-1) with 19 points, Holtz added a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double.
The Pirates were outrebounded 45-33 and couldn't overcome a difficult first half from the floor in which they were just 1-12 from behind the arc. The Pirates knocked down nine threes in the second half at a 56% clip, but CMU nearly matched it with seven of their own on 14 attempts.
The Tartans will be on the road against Whitman tomorrow night, Whitworth will host St. Olaf to close out the weekend.
