SPOKANE, Wash. –
Baylee Trejo was crucial to Whitworth's offensive attack, tallying an assist on both Whitworth goals, as the Pirates handled visiting Lewis & Clark 2-0 on Saturday.
Whitworth (3-5-3 overall, 3-4 NWC) won its third conference game in four matches while the Pioneers (4-6-1 overall, 3-3-1 NWC) have now dropped three of their last four.
The Pirates came into the match ranked 6
th in the NWC in goals scored with just nine this year but wasted no time in this match.
Addison Dizard cashed in a beautiful pass from Trejo in the 5
th minute, finding the bottom corner of the net to put the Pirates ahead 1-0 early.
Whitworth separated themselves further as Trejo launched a cross on target to
Rebekah Hines who found the back of the net at point blank range to give the Pirates a 2-0 cushion in the 57
th minute.
Kate Nelson earned her third shutout of the year, defending just two shots on goal from the Pioneers who were held scoreless for the third time this year. Whitworth controlled 68% of the possession and outshot Lewis & Clark 10-5, and 8-2 in shots on goal.
Whitworth will turn its focus to George Fox as they seek to get back to .500 in conference play. Both teams will be looking for their second consecutive win.
