Trejo cashes in 80th minute free kick to lift Whitworth over George Fox 1-0

SPOKANE, Wash. – Baylee Trejo scored an 80th minute goal on a free kick just outside the box to break a scoreless tie and lift the Pirates over George Fox 1-0 on Saturday for their second straight victory.

Baylee Trejo's free kick in the 80th minute glanced off the left leg of Hannah Hernandez inside the box before crossing the line for the game-winning goal. The ball was handled by Bruins' keeper Emily Robey, but not quite in time as it was ruled to have crossed the line prior to being stopped.

Whitworth (4-5-3 overall, 4-4 NWC) moved up to fourth in the conference on the back of their second straight shutout win, George Fox (4-5-3 overall, 2-4-2 NWC) remains seventh only ahead of Willamette and Pacific.

Both offenses were largely held in check, the Bruins especially as they recorded just a single shot on goal against a Whitworth defense that's now shut out its opponent in the three of its last four matches.

The Bruins' best opportunity came in the 24th minute when Pirates' midfielder Laura Pierson was given a yellow card allowing George Fox a free kick from just outside the box. But Willa Evans' shot sailed over the crossbar and the game remained scoreless.

Whitworth controlled 64% of the possession despite much of the game being played in their defensive third. The Bruins were persistent in their press defense but failed to turn their efforts into any real offense.

Whitworth turns its focus to next weekend where it'll host the conference's top two teams: Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound on October 14-15.
