Pirates strike early, handle Loggers 2-0

SPOKANE, Wash. – Emma Ellerd and Camryn Kuolt scored their first goals of the season and Whitworth dealt a critical blow to Puget Sound's chance at a conference title with an 2-0 win on Sunday.

Whitworth (5-6-3 overall, 5-5 conference) got their first win over the Loggers since March of 2021 to round off a weekend in which they hosted the NWC's top two teams. The Pirates' offense was opportunistic early on with both scores coming in the first half.

Whitworth took the lead in the 13th minute on a quick strike set up by Addison Dizard who found Ellerd running free down the left side. Ellerd's first goal of the year left the keeper with no chance as Ellerd found the top right corner to put the Pirates ahead 1-0.

In the 43rd minute, Emmy Moore's free kick was placed beautifully into a frenzy of players in front of the net before Kuolt got a touch on it, burying her first goal of the season to put Whitworth up two at halftime.

For the Loggers (8-4-2 overall, 6-2-2 conference) it was a frustrating day offensively as they were shut out for just the second time during conference play. Whitworth outshot them 13-11 and 5-4 in shots on goal. They had a few opportunities down the stretch but were thwarted close to the net.

Lily Parker exited the game in the 84th minute with an injury to her right arm after an apparent collision on a late corner kick, she did not return.

The Pirates will be on the road against Whitman on Wednesday, a win there could propel them into third in the NWC. Puget Sound will lick their wounds before next weekend where they host Willamette and Lewis & Clark.
