WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Baylee Trejo scored a 69th minute equalizing goal on an assist from Addison Dizard to lift the Pirates to a 1-1 road draw against Whitman on Wednesday.
Whitworth (5-6-4 overall, 5-5-1 NWC) fought back for its first tie in conference play after being shut out for nearly 70 minutes. The draw kept Whitworth in fourth place in the standings, but Whitman (7-4-4 overall, 6-3-2 NWC) is tied for second with Puget Sound at 20 points.
The game remained scoreless at half despite eleven combined shots on goal, but the Blues finally broke the ice as Chaney Heinbaugh found the bottom corner of the net on a close range shot to put Whitman ahead 1-0 in the 60th minute. Virginia Hunt was credited with her second assist of the season.
The Pirates found the equalizer just nine minutes later as Trejo converted a close range shot on a great feed from Dizard who now leads the Pirates with four assists.
Whitman had two opportunities for the winner in the 89th minute but couldn't capitalize. Pirate keeper Paige Broadrick (filling in for Kate Nelson) saved a shot from Leah Barnes, and the Blues couldn't score off the ensuing corner in the final seconds.
It was a physical match featuring a total of 26 fouls (19 committed by Whitman), and two yellow cards for each team. The Blues outshot Whitworth 14-6 (9-6 in shots on goal) yet managed just the one goal thanks to eight saves by Broadrick.
Whitman will travel to Pacific on Saturday for a noon kickoff before Whitworth gets its shot against the Boxers on Sunday.
