Friesen's goal lifts Pirates to 1-1 draw with UPS

SPOKANE, Wash. – Cole Friesen scored his 19th goal of the year on Sunday to lift Whitworth to its second 1-1 draw of the season against Puget Sound.

Whitworth (8-4-2 overall, 6-2-2 NWC) tied the Loggers back in September on the road, and the rematch was eerily similar.

Puget Sound (5-3-4 overall, 3-3-4 NWC) struck first when Rhys Foote found the back of the net in the 15th minute on a breakaway down the left side. Pema Globus and Graham Hall were both credited with assists on the goal.

But the Pirates found life immediately out of the break when Beckett Arthur flicked a long pass in stride to Friesen who chipped his shot over the Logger's keeper who was approaching rapidly. The 46th minute goal tied the game 1-1, and the Pirates looked like they were onto something.

Whitworth outshot the Loggers 24-7 and 6-3 in shots on goal but could not capitalize on its opportunities. Christian Pumpelly had a golden chance for the go-ahead goal in the 77th minute but his ground shot inched just left of the post to keep the game tied. Three different Pirates had five shots.

Friesen has now scored in seven straight games, but his streak of six consecutive multiple-goal games was snapped. Both matches between these schools featured a Puget Sound halftime lead followed by a Whitworth equalizer in the second half, (Dominic Gusman scored the equalizer in the first meeting).

The Pirates will remain in second place with 20 points, six points behind first place Pacific Lutheran. Whitworth will seek to get back in the win column Wednesday night at Whitman, while the Loggers will get back to action next weekend hosting Willamette and Lewis & Clark.
