Whitworth beats George Fox 57-45

SPOKANE, Wash.— Whitworth used a second-half comeback to beat visiting George Fox 57-45 and snap a five-game losing skid on Saturday afternoon in the Whitworth Fieldhouse. 

Whitworth's (5-10 overall, 2-4 NWC) last win was on Dec.19th vs Caltech. The Bruins fell to 5-10 overall, 2-4 NWC. 


The Pirates' defense kept the Bruins from scoring a single shot from the floor for nearly five minutes to start the opening frame. Olivia Mayer scored the first six points for the Pirates, but Whitworth was unable to build a lead, shooting just 27.8% from the floor. George Fox's offense came to life in the final minutes, outscoring Whitworth 9-5 to end the period tied 13-13.

Whitworth and George Fox battled in the second quarter, trading baskets to keep the game close. The period had eight lead changes alone, but Erin Yoshitake's step back three-pointer gave the Bruins the 31-26 edge over the Pirates at halftime. 

George Fox started the third period with a 5-0 run and take their largest lead up 32-26. Alyssa Fitzgerald's layup with 21 seconds remaining capped a 13-3 Pirate run and tied the game 39-39. Emily Stephens made a free throw to give the Bruins a 40-39 edge to end the period. 

The Pirates opened the fourth quarter scoring seven straight points to take their largest lead at that point, 46-40. A basket by George Fox's Yoshitake got the Bruins within three but Whitworth's Kimberly Dewey answered with a three-pointer on the other end of the floor. The Pirates took control of the game in the final frame, outscoring the Bruins 18-5 to end their five game losing skid and win 57-45. 

Quincy McDeid led the Pirates in scoring with a season high 19 points and three rebounds. Mayer finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds for her 13th double-double of the season, which leads all of NCAA Division III. Dewey added five points and nine rebounds. Whitworth made 19 of 55 from the field (34.5%) and 9 of 32 (28.1%) from behind the arc. The Pirates edged the Bruins 41-36 in rebounds. 

Erin Yoshitake led George Fox with 15 points and two rebounds. Alyssa Wells had 10 points and two rebounds. Emily Stephens added five points and four rebounds. George Fox made 17 of 50 from the floor (34.0%) and 6 of 13 (46.2%) from three point range. 

Whitworth will play Willamette on January 20th at 6:00 PM.
