TACOMA, Wash. — The visiting Whitworth Pirates beat the University of Puget Sound Loggers 2-1 in men's soccer on Sunday afternoon.
The Pirates (4-3-2 overall, 2-1-1 NWC) and Loggers (5-2-3, 1-2-1) were aggressive off the ball with a combined 26 fouls called. Three yellow cards were issued to Whitworth and one to UPS.
Tyler Wisen found the lower right of the net first for the Pirates in the 11th minute after a Logger free kick in a vulnerable spot.
Puget Sound's Ian Cameron evened the score in the 25th minute off a throw in by teammate Stuart Methner.
Whitworth's Jamie Rodriguez broke free in the middle of the field and found Sterling Eaglin who scored in the 53rd minute for the match-winning goal.
The Pirates outshot the Loggers 14-10 in total shots taken and 9-5 in shots on goal.
Logger goalkeeper Ryan Saunders was credited with seven saves in 90 minutes. Andrew Wolotira had four for the Pirates.
Whitworth will be back at home next weekend for a pair of NWC matches. The Pirates will take on Willamette Saturday and Linfield on Sunday. Both matches will begin at 2:30 PM.
