NEWBERG, Ore.— The Whitworth Pirates women's soccer team forced a 1-1 tie against the undefeated George Fox Bruins on Saturday afternoon.
It was the first blemish on the George Fox record all season and the first goal allowed by the Bruins (4-0-1 overall, 2-0-1 NWC) this year.
GFU scored first in the 24th minute when Maggie Phillips's ball found the left corner of the net.
A Pirate throw-in set up Savannah Acpal in the 43rd minute to even the score 1-1.
The Pirates (1-3-2, 1-1-1) were strong defensively while being outshot 23-12 in total shots and 11-6 in shots on goal by the Bruins .
Goalkeeper Kate Nelson protected the net for the Pirates, tallying 10 saves in 90 minutes played. Madeline Bailey had five for the Bruins.
Whitworth will play next in Forest Grove, Ore. against Pacific (Ore.) on Sunday at 12:00 PM.
