TACOMA, Wash. – Puget Sound handed visiting Whitworth its first Northwest Conference volleyball loss in two seasons with a sweep on Saturday night, ending the Pirates' school-record 17-match NWC winning streak.
The Loggers (5-5 overall, 2-0 NWC) defeated the Pirates (7-3, 1-1) 25-21, 25-17, 25-22.
UPS never trailed in the opening set after jumping out to a 5-1 lead after consecutive Whitworth attack errors. The Pirates pulled within 11-10 on a kill by Logan Spencer, but the Loggers answered with another 5-1 run for a 16-11 lead. The Bucs got back within 22-20 before UPS won the set on a kill by Sarah Johnson. Jaye Hodge had three kills in the set for Whitworth, while Maddie Klopcic had five for the Loggers.
Puget Sound broke a 4-4 tie early in the second set with an 11-1 run to open a 15-5 advantage. The Bucs cut the lead to 19-13 on a kill from Logan Spencer, but could not extend the comeback. The Loggers hit .302 in the set, including six kills by Jenna Williams.
Whitworth appeared poised to get back into the match after going up 11-6 in the third set on an ace by Eva Millan. But Puget Sound answered with a 13-3 run to take a 19-14 lead. The Pirates pulled back within 22-21 on a kill by Maddie Lee, but the Loggers held off the comeback attempt. Lee had six kills in the final frame for the Bucs.
Lee led Whitworth with 10 kills. Hodge finished with six and Spencer had five. Whitworth was limited to a .139 hitting percentage.
Avery Allemann led Puget Sound with ten kills, Williams had eight and Klopcic added seven. Logan Winn dished 24 assists, helping the Loggers to a .211 hitting percentage.
Whitworth will finally get to play at home next Wednesday (Sept. 21) against Whitman College.
