Baseball Knocks Off PLU in Game One

PARKLAND, Wash. – Visiting Whitworth scored seven runs in the second inning to win the opener of a Northwest Conference baseball doubleheader 8-3 on Saturday at Pacific Lutheran.  The Lutes came back to win the second game 5-0.

The Pirates (6-22 overall, 5-11 NWC) prevented PLU (16-9, 10-7) from moving into first place in the NWC standings.  The teams will complete the three-game series on Sunday afternoon.

Game 1:  Whitworth 8, PLU 3
Jaxsen Sweum, Dawson Warner and Riley Cissne had three hits each to lead the visiting Pirates at the plate, while Dillon McCardle picked up his first collegiate pitching win.

Whitworth broke out early, scoring seven runs in the second inning.  Cissne got the Bucs on the board with an RBI single.  Aidan Morrison added a two run single and JJ Fahnlander drove in two more with a double to deep left center field.  Two runs also scored on wild pitches.

Andy Schmitz hit a solo home run in the third to get the Lutes on the scoreboard and John Graham added an RBI single in the fifth.

Sweum drilled his team-leading seventh home run of the season in the sixth for Whitworth's final run.  The Lutes scored their final run in the seventh.

McCardle allowed two runs on five hits and two walks in five innings to improve to 1-2 this season.  He struck out three batters.  Hunter Williams tossed three innings of relief and gave up one run on three hits.  Austin Rice pitched a perfect ninth to finish up.

Tommy Snyder (5-1) lost his first game of the year after allowing seven runs (six earned) on six hits and two walks in only 1.1 innings.  Alex Gregory threw the next 6.2 innings for PLU and allowed one run on six hits.  Nathan Anderson pitched the ninth.

Game 2: PLU 5, Whitworth 0
Lute pitcher Spencer Howell scattered five hits over eight innings and Jack Robinette threw a perfect ninth as the Pirates suffered their first shutout loss of the season.

Cole Trotignon's RBI single in the first gave PLU all the runs it would need.  The Lutes would go on to score single runs in each of the first five innings.  Trotignon went 4-4 with two RBI's to lead PLU offensively.

Howell (5-0) struck out five batters and walked three in his eight innings to remain perfect on the mound this season.

Josh Grimes (0-6) gave up four runs (three earned) on nine hits in 3.2 innings for Whitworth.  Dylan Owen threw the final 4.1 innings and allowed one run on three hits.
