SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth University closed out the 2022 men's tennis schedule with an 8-1 loss to visiting Pacific University on Saturday at the Scotford Tennis Center.
The Pirates finish 4-15 overall and 4-4 in the NWC, good for fifth place in the final standings. The Boxers improved to 10-7 and 6-1 and will play Whitman for second place in the NWC standings on Sunday.
Pacific swept the three doubles contests. Cameron Brewer and Payton Romey lost by a single break (8-5) to Pacific's Nicholas Koulisis and Joey Hu at #3 doubles in a match that took over an hour.
Romey gained Whitworth's only point of the match. He led 6-4, 3-0 at #4 singles when opponent Koby Murata retired.
Nathan Tjelle's match went more than one set at #5 singles. He fell 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7) at #5 singles. Ethan Warring nearly forced a third set at #3 singles before losing 6-1, 7-6 (7-2). Mason Tran defeated Ethan Violette 6-0, 6-3 at #1 singles.
