Whitworth starts slow, falls to Whitman 21-12

SPOKANE, Wash. – Visiting Whitman caught Whitworth flat-footed in the first quarter and used that advantage to cruise to a 21-12 win over the Pirates in a Northwest Conference women's lacrosse match on Wednesday afternoon at the Pine Bowl.

Madeline Sherry scored six goals and added two assists for the Blues (4-6 overall, 3-4 NWC), while Kylee Walker had four goals and two assists for the Pirates (5-8, 3-6).

Whitman outscored Whitworth 7-0 in the first period, outshooting the Pirates 19-4 and dominating draw controls 7-0.  Sherry, Eliza Daigle and Gracie Maulik all scored two goals in the period.  Maulik and Daigle also each had an assist.

Walker finally got Whitworth on the board at 13:25 of the second quarter.  The Pirates pulled within 8-3 on a goal by Kenzie Hemman and had several chances to trim the lead further.  But Whitworth committed nine turnovers in the period and Whitman led 9-3 at the half. 

The Pirates were within 12-6 when Anna Chase scored off an assist by Walker just under five minutes into the third quarter.  But the Blues scored four of the next five goals to go ahead 16-7.  Sherry had two of those tallies.  Whitman led 17-9 at the end of the third after Abby Hahn scored for the Bucs with three seconds left in the period.

Walker's final goal pulled Whitworth within 18-12 with 7:06 to play as the Pirates opened the fourth quarter with a 3-1 run.  But Whitworth would not score again.  Maulik scored twice for Whitman down the stretch.

Maulik finished with four goals and two assists, while Daigle had three goals and four assists.  The Blues had assists on ten of their 21 goals.

Hahn had three goals for the Pirates.

Whitman finished with a 49-29 edge in shot attempts.  Hannah Lew played the first half in goal for Whitworth and allowed nine goals with 11 saves.  Sage Fosnock tended net in the second half and gave up 12 goals with seven saves.

Sophia Maroulis allowed 12 goals and made six saves for Whitman.

Whitworth plays at Puget Sound on Saturday in the Pirates' final road match of the season.
