Pacific starts fast in Sunday's win

SPOKANE, Wash.—Damon Tanner hit three home runs to lead visiting Pacific to an 18-7 win over Whitworth and a series sweep on Sunday at Merkel Field.

Whitworth (4-15 overall, 3-5 NWC) will attempt to rebound on Wednesday when the Pirates host Whitman.

The Boxers (13-7, 7-5) scored five in the top of the first on a two-run home run by Ryan Krout and a three-run homer by Tanner.

Pacific added three more in the second to drive Whitworth starting pitcher Austin Rice from the game and take an 8-0 lead.

Dawson Warner singled to score Jacob Doughty and Hunter Dryden in the bottom of the second to get the Pirates on the board. Warner went 3-4 at the plate on Sunday.

Whitworth got back in the game in the bottom of the fourth when Jaxsen Sweum hit a three-run home run during a four run rally to get the Bucs within 9-6. Sweum finished 2-3 at the plate.

Tyler Quinn answered with a three-run home run for Pacific in the top of the fifth.

Tanner added a solo home run in the top of the sixth, and a three-run shot in the top of the ninth.  He finished 4-6 with eight RBIs.

In the bottom of the ninth, Matt Nichols hit a solo home run in the first plate appearance of his Pirate career.

Warner went 3-4 with two

Rice (0-5) allowed eight hits and eight runs, all earned, in 1.2 innings. Hudson Andrews gave up seven runs (four earned) in 3.2 innings of relief.  Gunnar Kuehl and Josh Grimes finished up on the mound for Whitworth.

Pacific pitcher CJ Colyer (1-0) got the win for the Boxers after only giving up one hit and zero runs in 3.2 innings of relief.
