THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.—Cal Lutheran starting pitcher Chris Torres struck out seven batters in a 3-1win over visiting Whitworth in the series finale on Sunday.
The Kingsmen (4-0) to sweep the three-game series while the Pirates fell to 1-3 on the season.
Gordon Richardson put Cal Lutheran on the board in the first inning with a solo home run.
Neither team scored again until the fifth inning, when Riley Cissne was walked with the bases loaded to score Gage Gibson and tie up the game 1-1.
The Kingsmen responded in the bottom of the sixth inning when a Zac Bullard groundout scored Max Heverly, 2-1.
Cal Lutheran added an insurance run in the seventh inning when Austin Carillo singled home Josh Quinn.
Dylan Owen (0-1) was the losing pitcher for Whitworth, giving up four hits and two runs in three innings of relief. Starting pitcher Dillon McCardle pitched two innings, giving up three hits but only one run, and Hunter Williams gave up two hits and no runs in three innings of relief, tallying two strikeouts.
Nathan Chapman (1-0) was the winning pitcher for the Kingsmen, allowing only one hit in 1.1 innings of relief. Torres allowed only one hit and one run in 4.2 innings. Both Zach Creighton and Will Watson held Whitworth to zero runs and zero hits in two combined innings of relief.
Whitworth committed three errors in the loss and had three hits.
The Pirates travel next to Lewiston, Idaho to play a three-game series with Lewis-Clark State College on Sat, Feb. 12 at noon and 3pm, and Sun, Feb. 13 at 11am.
