FOREST GROVE, Ore.—Camy Aguinaldo's 23 points lifted Pacific over visiting Whitworth 69-66 in a Northwest Conference women's basketball game on Saturday night.
Pacific moves to 15-6 and 9-3 in the Northwest Conference. Whitworth falls to 8-14 overall and 3-10 in the NWC.
Aguinaldo opened the game for the Boxers with a three-pointer. The Pirates responded with a seven-point run to go in front 7-3. A two-point run by Pacific tied it up, and the teams traded shots again to tie the game at 10. The Boxers closed the quarter on a twelve point run to lead 22-15.
Pacific started the second quarter with a free throw but the Whitworth offense exploded with a nine-point run, led by Olivia Mayer. A six-point run with two minutes remaining in the quarter put the Pirates up 37-29, and two Taylor Smith free-throws closed the quarter for Whitworth. The Bucs led 39-31 at the break. The Boxers shot 42.4% in the half, and scored 11 of their points off of Whitworth turnovers. The Pirates shot a slightly higher 51.5% in the half, and scored ten points from Boxer turnovers. Mayer shot a perfect 5-5 in the first half with twelve points.
Pacific opened the second half with a five-point run, but Whitworth scored seven points in return, maintaining a 46-38 lead. Back-to-back three pointers by Anya Henderson brought the Boxers within three, 49-46, and scored three points to close out the half with Whitworth ahead 51-49.
The Boxers ran nearly five minutes off the clock with a nine-point scoring run early in the fourth quarter to lead 58-55. Whitworth attempted to foul to regain possession of the ball to win the game, but six made free throws sealed the game for the Boxers. Whitworth had only one offensive rebound and shot 37.8% in the second half. Mayer was held to only two points. Pacific shot an even 50% in the second half, and had ten offensive rebounds.
Mayer finished the game with 14 points and four rebounds. Devyn Cope just missed a career-high with 11 points and four rebounds.
Aguinaldo had 23 points for Pacific and shot 9-11 from the free throw line. Brilie Kovaloff added 10 points.
Whitworth travels again next weekend to take on Pacific Lutheran in Parkland, Washington on February 11 at 6pm.
