SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Visiting Whitworth swept a non-conference softball doubleheader on Sunday at Trinity University. The Pirates (4-2) held on to win the first game 5-3, then ran away in the nightcap 15-3 in five innings.
Whitworth will take another six-game road trip next weekend in Southern California.
Game 1 – Whitworth 5, Trinity 3
Maddy Thomas and Heather Menzer each drove in a pair of runs to back Corrine Vasiloff's complete game. Whitworth built a 5-0 lead and survived a late rally.
Whitworth had runners on second and third in the first and Thomas lofted a fly ball that was dropped by the right fielder, allowing Rylee Gentner to score.
The Pirates added four runs in the fifth. Taylor Hoffheins scored on a fielder's choice and Mattea Nelson scored on a Thomas ground out. Menzer drove in the final two runs with a triple.
Vasiloff sailed through the first five innings. Trinity scored an unearned run in the sixth when Jessica Lloyd led off with a single and eventually scored on a throwing error on an attempted pick off.
The Tigers (0-6) scored two more in the seventh. Pinch runner Sydney Watson scored on an error off the bat of Brianna Pena. Pena scored the final run on a wild pitch. Vasiloff got the final outs with the potential tying run at the plate.
Vasiloff (2-1) allowed three runs (none earned) on only four hits in her complete game. She struck out four and walked two batters.
Cat Peterson (0-2) went the distance for Trinity, allowing five earned runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and two walks.
Game 2 – Whitworth 15, Trinity 3 (5 inn.)
Menzer, Kelly Hruza and Jessica Rusconi all drove in three runs each as Whitworth ended the second game in only five innings.
The Pirates scored five in the top of the first inning after scoring a run on four straight walks. Rusconi added a two-run single.
The Bucs added four more in the second, including Menzer's two run single and Rusconi's RBI double. Hruza and Menzer had RBI singles in the third for an 11-0 lead.
Trinity got three runs back in the bottom of the third before Whitworth scored four more times in the fourth. Hruza had a two-run double in the final rally.
Hruza was 2-2 with three RBIs, while Menzer went 2-4 with three driven in. Rusconi went 2-3.
Momi Lyman (2-1) went all five innings for Whitworth, allowing three runs (none earned) on five hits. She struck out two and walked two.
Four different pitchers threw for Trinity. Emery Boettcher started and took the loss after allowing four runs on four walks.
