TACOMA, Wash. – Puget Sound's pressure defense forced 24 turnovers, allowing the Loggers to overcome a tough challenge from visiting Whitworth 89-77 in the Northwest Conference women's basketball opener for both schools on Friday night.
League-favorite Puget Sound improved to 5-1 overall, while the Pirates dropped to 2-4 with their third straight setback. Olivia Mayer had her fifth double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Bucs.
Whitworth held up to the pressure well in the early-going, taking a 9-4 lead after consecutive baskets by Devyn Cope and Kimberly Dewey. After UPS went in front 16-12 on three straight buckets from Kennedy Brown, the Pirates answered with a 9-0 run thanks to back-to-back three-pointers from Quincy McDeid. Whitworth led 21-19 at the end of the first after making 8-13 (61.5%) from the field in the first period.
The turnovers started to pile up in the second quarter, as Whitworth committed seven against the press. The score was tied 32-32 when UPS closed with a 5-1 run to lead 37-33 at the break. Mayer had seven points in the period for the Bucs.
Brown opened the second half with a three-pointer for the Loggers and the game started to get away at that point. Leading 44-39, Puget Sound used a 14-0 run to go ahead 58-39 after a basket by Jordyn Reverman. It was the largest lead of the game for UPS. Madison Hagen's three-pointer cut the deficit to 65-52 at the end of the period. Whitworth made only 5 of 19 (26.3%) from the field in the third.
The Pirates were able to cut the margin to 10 points on three occasions in the fourth quarter, but could never get the lead to below double digits. Dewey's basket with 3:47 to go made it 79-69, but Brown answered with another big basket for the Loggers.
McDeid added 17 points and Hagen had 14 to give Whitworth three players in double figures. Whitworth finished the game 25-61 (41%) from the floor and 8-20 (40%) from beyond the arc. The Pirates outrebounded the Loggers 46-33.
Brown led all players with 32 points for UPS. Reverman added 16 as the Loggers finished 35-75 (46.7%) from the field and 5-15 (33%) from three-point range.
Whitworth will play at Pacific Lutheran on Saturday.
