PASADENA, Calif.— Quincy McDeid made five three-pointers and Olivia Mayer tallied her seventh double-double of the season to help Whitworth roll past Caltech 70-47 in a non-conference women's basketball game on Monday afternoon in Braun Gymnasium.
Whitworth (4-5) avenged a 54-48 loss to Caltech (5-6) on November 26 in Santa Cruz, California.
The Pirates never trailed, opening the first quarter on a 7-0 run, capped by Devin Cope's layup. The Beavers were able to put points on the board but Mayer's three-pointer gave Whitworth an 18-7 lead with 2:47 remaining. The Bucs were able to hold onto an eight point lead to end the quarter.
Whitworth's defense was strong in the second period, limiting Caltech to only ten points. Alyssa Fitzgerald's layup with 39 seconds remaining put the Pirates up by 15, their largest of the half. Sahana Saikumar was able to answer on the other end for the Beavers to end the period down 35-22.
Saikumar made a basket to start the third quarter and cut the Pirate lead to 11, but Whitworth quickly responded. McDeid knocked down three treys in the third period alone, to put Whitworth up 55-35. The Bucs posted their second 20-point quarter of the game.
Three-pointers continued to fall for the Pirates as Sydney McLean swished one through to start the final frame. Caltech battled, but Whitworth continued to dominate both ends of the floor and beat the Beavers 70-47.
McDeid led the Pirates with 17 points, including 5-9 from three-point range, and eight rebounds. Mayer finished with 15 points and 14 rebounds, her seventh double-double performance of the season. Cope added 11 points.
Whitworth was 27 of 68 (39.7%) from the floor, 8 of 24 (33.3%) from behind the arc, and 8 of 12 (66.7%) from the charity stripe. The Pirates outrebounded the Beavers 50-36 and outscored Caltech in the paint 30-20.
Saikumar had her own double-double for the Beavers with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Claire Perhach finished with 11 and five. Caltech made 18 of 63 (28.6%) from the floor, 2-10 (20.0%) from behind the arc, and 9 of 13 (69.2%) from the free throw line.
Whitworth will play Whittier on Wednesday at 1:00 PM.
