SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth scored 46 first half points to run away from visiting Cal Lutheran 71-56 in a non-conference Division III men's basketball game on Tuesday night in the Whitworth Fieldhouse.
The Pirates shot 62.5% (20-32) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes to improve to 2-2 this season. The Kingsmen fell to 1-4 overall and 1-2 on their Northwest road trip.
Whitworth never trailed, getting an opening three-pointer from Michael Smith and a basket in the paint from Jake Holtz. A three-pointer by Jerry Twenge increased the lead to 10-2 just over three minutes into the game. Devon Lewis scored to get CLU within 13-8, but the Pirates followed with an 18-2 run over the next six minutes. Holtz started the run with two straight baskets and JT McDermott scored four buckets in a row. Holtz ended the run with a basket off a CLU turnover to give the Pirates a 31-10 lead. Rowan Anderson hit a three-pointer in the final seconds to increase the lead to 46-22 at halftime.
Holtz scored off an inbounds pass five minutes into the second half to give Whitworth its largest lead of the game at 55-26. The lead remained in the high-20s until the Kingsmen began to chip away over the final five minutes.
Holtz posted his first career double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. McDermott added 13 points and Anderson scored ten. Ten different Pirates scored points in the game.
Whitworth cooled off slightly in the second half and finished the game 31-55 (56.4%) from the field, 8-24 (33.3%) from three-point range. The Pirates were uncharacteristically cold at the free throw line (1 of 6). Whitworth ended the game with a 38-25 advantage in rebounds, helping off-set 15 second half turnovers.
Desi Burrage led CLU with 14 points, while Lewis finished with ten. Stephen Davis hit three three-pointers off the bench in the second half.
Whitworth will head to Colorado Springs to compete in the Rocky Mountain Classic over the Thanksgiving break. The Pirates will take on Carleton (Minn.) on Friday and either host Colorado College or Carroll (Wis.) on Saturday.
