KIRKLAND, Wash.— Five players scored in double figures to lead the Whitworth Pirates to their first road win of the season, beating Haskell Indian Nations 86-64 in a non-conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at the Northwest Classic hosted by Northwest University.
Whitworth and Haskell Indian Nations kept the score close to start out the first period, but a trey by Quincy Mcdeid gave the Pirates a 24-16 lead with 3:01 remaining. The Fighting Indians fought their way back to end the period down 26-24.
Neither team was able to create much distance in the second quarter. Haskell took its largest lead at 31-26 over Whitworth after a made basket by Marilyn Goodman with 6:50 remaining. Olivia Mayer's basket at the buzzer gave the Pirates a 39-38 edge at the half.
Whitworth's offense got going in the second half, and after a string of made baskets, the Fighting Indians were forced to take a timeout with 2:11 remaining after Kimberly Dewey's shot put the Pirates up 60-49.
Shots for the Pirates only continued to fall in the fourth period as Whitworth made 23 points in the final ten minutes to lift past Haskell Indian Nations 86-64.
Olivia Mayer finished with 21 points and 15 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Kimberly Dewey and Alyssa Fitzgerald had new career-highs in scoring, finishing with 16 and 10 points, respectively. Quincy Mcdeid added 12 and Madison Hagen totaled 10.
Grace Tahawah led the Fighting Indians in scoring with 13 and Marilyn Goodman finished with 12.
The Pirates shot 47.7% (31-65) from the floor, were 8-20 (40%) from the three-point line and made 16-18 (88.9%) free throws. The Fighting Indians shot 31.4% (22-70) from the floor, made 4-21 (19%) treys and were 16-21 (76.2%) from the free throw line.
The Pirates dominated the boards 60-29 to offset 26 turnovers.
Whitworth will play next weekend against Caltech on Saturday at 1:00 PM at UC Santa Cruz.
