Pirates crush Blues in Battle of Whits

SPOKANE, Wash.— The Whitworth Pirates shutout the visiting Whitman Blues in dominating fashion 6-0 in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match on Wednesday afternoon.

Whitworth (2-6-2, 2-4-1 NWC) had six different players score to defeat the Blues (4-6-0, 1-6-0 NWC) in the Battle of Whits.  Five of the goals were the first of the year for those players.

Whitworth's Laura Pierson scored first in the second minute after Taliya Miyama's pass deflected off a Whitman defender and fell in front of an open net.

Savannah Acpal found the bottom left corner of the net in the seventh minute after a pass from Miyama.

The Blues held the Pirates from scoring again until Baylee Trejo and Laura Pierson connected with Lauryn Roszak in the 56th minute.

Trejo netted her own goal in the 60th minute. Camryn Gardner was credited with the assist.

In the 70th minute Emma Foulk stole a pass from a Whitman defender and scored to put the Pirates up 5-0.

Kylee Russell found Whitworth's final goal of the match in the 87th minute off a pass from Addison Dizard.

Only Acpal had already scored a goal this season.

The Pirates outshot the Blues 12-10 in total shots taken and 8-3 on shots on target.

Whitman's goalkeepers Hannah Hagler and Emily Badgley were each credited with one save in 45 minutes played. Kate Nelson had three for the Pirates in 90 minutes.

Whitworth will play next on the road at Linfield on October 8th at 12:00 PM.
