SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth defense posted its first shutout in four seasons while Jaedyn Prewitt led the offense with four touchdown passes during Saturday's 59-0 Northwest Conference football win over visiting Puget Sound in the Pine Bowl.
The Pirates (5-3 overall, 3-2 NWC) won their second straight while the Loggers slipped to 0-7, 0-5.
Whitworth held Silas Washington, the NWC's leading rusher, to 50 yards on 18 carries and limited the Loggers to -2 yards running thanks to six sacks and ten tackles for loss. The Pirates posted their first shutout win since October of 2018 at Willamette.
Prewitt, making his first start since the season opener, completed 19 of 24 passes for 286 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. Those TD passes went to four different receivers.
Isaiah Jones scored Whitworth's first touchdown on a six-yard run to complete an 80-yard drive with 5:28 left in the first quarter. Alan Ballew hauled in a 73-yard touchdown pass from Prewitt for the Pirates second TD at the end of the first period.
Puget Sound had its best drive at the start of the second, moving 60 yards to the Whitworth 22 before Lindon Sevilleja intercepted Mason Binning's pass in the endzone. The Pirates turned that turnover into a 37-yard touchdown pass to Riley Morrison six plays later.
Whitworth scored twice late in the half. The first came when JT Munoz strip-sacked Binning near the 30-yard line, and after a scramble for the ball, recovered in the endzone for a touchdown. Sevilleja then intercepted his second pass of the game at the Whitworth 47. The Pirates went 53 yards in 36 seconds to score on a one-yard completion to Isaac Fields on the final play of the period for a 35-0 halftime lead.
Solo Hines, who had four touchdown runs last week at Willamette, scored from three yards out early in the third quarter for the Bucs' first TD of the second half.
Prewitt's fourth touchdown pass of the game was a nine-yard completion to Jarvis Natividad with 2:15 to play in the third. It was Prewitt's final pass.
Luis Salgado broke free for a 63-yard touchdown run, completing a one-play drive for Whitworth with 11:27 to play in the game.
The Pirates' final points came on a 26-yard field goal by Alvaro Campos-Ontiveros with 6:53 to play.
Whitworth outgained Puget Sound 499-256, despite UPS holding a 34:46 – 25:14 edge in time of possession.
Ethan Peloquin led the Bucs with four catches for 36 yards. Ballew finished with three receptions for 101 yards, while Fields also had three catches (28 yards). Salgado finished with 75 yards rushing on three carries, while Hines had 39 yards on eight attempts. Six different players had rushing attempts as Whitworth picked up 197 yards on the ground.
Binning completed 23 of 40 passes for 249 yards with two interceptions. Joe Gallagher caught nine passes for 98 yards.
Derrick Platt and Dylan Ventress had seven tackles each for the Pirate defense. Five different players combined for the six sacks, including 1.5 each by Spencer Lyman and Elijah Uwekoolani.
Whitworth will play at Pacific University next Saturday before ending the season at home against George Fox on November 12th.
