SPOKANE, Wash. – Maddie Lee had 15 kills and hit .378 to lead Whitworth to a sweep of visiting Lewis & Clark in a Northwest Conference volleyball match on Friday night in the Whitworth Fieldhouse.
The Pirates (15-6 overall, 9-4 NWC) won 25-12, 25-15, 25-23 to remain tied for first place in the Northwest Conference standings with Puget Sound. The Pioneers (1-17, 0-13) continue to search for their first conference win.
Whitworth used a 5-0 run early in the opening set to take an 11-5 lead after a block from Jaye Hodge. After L&C pulled within 12-9, the Pirates added a 6-1 run to go up 18-10 after a kill from Lee. Cassidy Franklin's kill won it for the Bucs, who hit .379 in the opening game. Lee had six kills in the first set, as many as L&C combined.
Whitworth used a 9-0 run in the second game to pull out to a 16-6 lead. Lee had four straight kills during that run, followed by three straight Pioneer attack errors. Lee's final kill of the set, her seventh of the second game, was the final point.
The final set was the most competitive of the night, featuring three ties and three lead changes. Whitworth jumped ahead 13-6 on a kill by Hodge, but L&C used a 6-1 run to get within 14-12 after a kill from Emily Strand. Whitworth went back ahead 20-14 on an ace from Ella Jimenez, but the Pioneers got within 22-21 after Whitworth's attack error. Ella Jimenez won it with a kill for the Pirates.
Lee finished with a match-high 16.5 points, including one solo block and one block assist. Jimenez had 10 points on six kills, two aces, and three blocks (one solo, two assists). Joelle Forbes (15) and Megan Lange (12) had 27 of Whitworth's 30 assists. Eva Millan finished with 16 digs.
Izzy Willis led L&C with ten points on eight kills and two aces. Strand also had eight kills.
Whitworth will play its final home match of the season on Saturday against George Fox. Lee, Millan, Forbes and Renee Tiumalu will all be recognized prior to the start of the match.
