SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth's comeback attempt came up short in a 2-1 loss to visiting Puget Sound in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match on Saturday afternoon.
The Loggers improved to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in the NWC this season, while the Pirates dropped to 1-5-2, 1-3-1.
Ava Cholakian took advantage of a failed clear attempt by the Whitworth defense and turned it into her eighth goal of the season in the ninth minute. The score remained 1-0 at halftime as the Loggers held an 8-4 shot advantage at the break.
Radhika Webster-Schultz made it 2-0 in the 73rd minute, finishing one-on-one against Whitworth keeper Kate Nelson from a through pass by Zoe Fowler.
Maggie Ames scored her first goal of the season on a header off the foot of Taliya Miyama in the 79th minute to get Whitworth back within a goal.
The Pirates had two chances to tie the match in the final minute, but Logger keeper Chaylea Tome saved shot attempts by Kalle Crouch and Kalena Pfaeltzer.
Puget Sound outshot the Bucs 15-9, including a 7-5 edge in shots on-goal. Nelson made five saves for Whitworth while Tome had four stops for UPS.
Whitworth will host Pacific Lutheran on Sunday.
