UPS Women Run Past Whitworth

Visiting Puget Sound's fast-paced play proved to be too much for Whitworth as the Loggers rolled to an 82-59 Northwest Conference women's basketball win on Friday night. Puget sound (12-1, 1-0 NWC) scored 26 points off 28 Pirate turnovers, causing Whitworth to fall to 5-8 overall and 0-4 in NWC play.  

Sophie Nilsson opened the game for the Loggers with a three-pointer. Two Devyn Cope free throws kept the Pirates in the game 3-2, but Puget Sound's high-powered offense overwhelmed Whitworth in the first quarter. The Loggers went on an 11-0 run with four minutes remaining in the quarter to go up 23-9. A Kimberly Dewey three pointer closed the gap slightly to end the quarter 28-13. Puget Sound shot 57.9% from the field and 46.2% from beyond the arc, and Whitworth shot 36.4% and 50% from three. The Pirates turned the ball over 12 times and the Loggers seven.

Whitworth bounced back in the second quarter, opening with a four-point run that cut the Puget Sound lead to eight. The Pirates closed the half with a Genevieve Symons layup, leaving the score 41-31. Puget Sound shot only 22.7% in the quarter compared to Whitworth's game-best 57.1%. The Pirates out-rebounded the Loggers 14-11, but lost the turnover battle 5-1.

Whitworth opened the second half with a Quincy McDeid jumper, but the Logger offense responded to shoot a game-best 58.8% from the field in the third quarter. An 11-0 run with four minutes left buried the Pirates 66-42. Georgia Lavinder scored six of those eleven points. Whitworth rallied to end the quarter on a four-point run, but only cut the lead to 68-47. The Pirates shot an even 30% from the field and tallied 14 rebounds, four more than the Loggers. Whitworth recorded five turnovers to Puget Sound's three.

The Loggers only outscored the Pirates by two points in the fourth quarter, but Whitworth shot a night worst 25% from the field compared to Puget Sound's 41.2%. The Pirates recorded 14 rebounds to the Loggers' eight.

Olivia Mayer notched 17 points and 16 rebounds in the loss. Madison Hagen added a dozen points for the Pirates.

Kennedy Brown had 18 points for the Loggers, and Samantha Swartout tallied eight rebounds.

Whitworth returns to the Fieldhouse Saturday against Pacific Lutheran University at 4pm.
