SALEM, Ore.—Maddie Lee pounded 21 kills to lead visiting Whitworth to a four-set win over Willamette in a Northwest Conference volleyball match on Saturday night.
The Pirates (9-2 overall, 4-0 NWC) won 25-14, 25-27, 25-21, 25-17 to sweep their weekend trip to Oregon.
Whitworth opened the match with a Saylor Anderson service ace. After the teams were tied at 6-6, Whitworth pulled away and led the rest of the game. The Pirates hit .316 in the first set as a team, and the Bearcats hit .077.
Kills by Abigail Hudson and Cassidy Franklin put Whitworth in front early in the second set, but three attack errors and a Willamette service ace by Natalie Klotz turned the set around for the Bearcats. After ties at 24 and then 25, Willamette (4-5, 1-3) won the set behind back-to-back kills from Dani Queja and Klotz. The Pirates hit .163, their worst average of the night. Meanwhile, the Bearcats hit .179, their best average of the night.
Whitworth got out in front early in the third frame with a 6-1 run that included a Kaitlyn White service ace. The Bearcats rallied to tie the game up at 17-17 before the Pirates put it away with kills from Hudson and Abby Wolverton. Willamette hit a match worst .029 in the third set.
The Pirates scored the first three points of the fourth set and never trailed, capping the match with a Kaity Barr kill and a 3-1 win to remain perfect in conference. Whitworth hit .325 in the last set, their best average of the night.
Natalie Klotz led the Bearcat offense with 11 kills, and Dani Queja had 10.
Lee led the Pirates with 21 kills and scoring 23 total points for the team. Cassidy Franklin contributed four blocks, and Eva Milan finished the match with 24 digs. Anderson dished 29 of the team's 52 assists and served three aces.
Whitworth returns to the Fieldhouse on Friday, Oct. 1 at 7pm to host Puget Sound.
