CLAREMONT, Calif. – Pomona-Pitzer rallied with two goals in the final minutes to defeat visiting Whitworth 3-2 in a non-conference men's soccer match on Sunday.
The Pirates fell to 1-2-1 after dropping their second straight match. The Sagehens improved to 2-1.
Jose Bautista scored his first goal of the season in the 21st minute to give Whitworth the lead.
Pomona-Pitzer tied the game ten minutes later on a goal by Kyle Lau. The match was tied 1-1 at halftime.
The Pirates took a 2-1 lead when Becket Arthur scored his team-leading third goal of the season in the 61st minute.
The lead held until the 78th minute when Graeme Logan scored on an assist from Jared Mejia. Alex Bonville scored what proved to be the match-winner in the 85th minute.
Whitworth was unable to get off a potential tying shot before the clock ran out.
Pomona-Pitzer finished with an 18-13 advantage in shots, but the Pirates had an 8-7 edge in shots on goal. The Bucs also had a 3-1 lead in corner kicks.
Bo Broyles made four saves in goal for Whitworth. Ethan Bae stopped six shots for the Sagehens.
Whitworth will open Northwest Conference play at home next weekend against Willamette and Linfield.
