Box Score PARKLAND, Wash. – Kaity Barr and Abby Wolverton combined for 25 kills without an error to lead visiting Whitworth to a 19-25, 25-22, 25-12, 25-19 win over Pacific Lutheran in a Northwest Conference volleyball match on Friday night.
Barr led the Pirates (6-0) with 18.5 points, adding two service aces and 3.5 blocks to her 13 kills. Wolverton now has 31 kills without an error in her last 66 attacks.
PLU (3-4) jumped out to a 19-8 lead early in the first set before Whitworth closed to within 21-18. The Lutes were able to close out the set by outscoring the Pirates 4-1.
Pacific Lutheran appeared ready to win the second set also after Baylee Johnson's kill staked the Lutes to an early 9-3 lead. Whitworth used an 11-3 run to go ahead 14-12. Wolverton had three kills in the run and Evan Millan served consecutive service aces. The Pirates won the decisive second set on a kill by Akon A'leu.
Whitworth dominated the third set by hitting .333 as a team and limiting the Lutes to a .000 hitting percentage. The Pirates led only 9-8 in the early going before taking control with a 9-2 run.
The fourth set was tied 17-17 when Whitworth finished with an 8-2 run that clinched the match. The Pirates got three blocks in the run and ended the contest on Barr's final kill.
Maddie Lee led Whitworth with 16 kills and finished with 17.5 points. Millan led the team with four service aces, while Saylor Anderson and Joelle Forbes combined for 41 assists. The Pirates finished the match with a team hitting percentage of .214 and 10.0 team blocks.
Johnson led PLU with 12 kills and 14.0 points, but none of her kills came after the second set. Lauren Wilson also had a dozen kills for the Lutes, who hit .067 as a team and had 7.0 team blocks.
Whitworth and PLU will complete their season series on Saturday night at 6:00 pm.
