SPOKANE, Wash. – Jose Bautista scored twice in the second half to lead the Whitworth men's soccer team to a 3-2 win over visiting Puget Sound in Saturday's Northwest Conference match in the Pine Bowl.
Whitworth (2-3, 2-3 NWC) trailed 2-1 to Puget Sound (2-3, 2-3) early in the second half but Bautista tied the game in the 62nd minute and sent in the match-winner in the 75th minute.
Dominic Gusman scored his third goal of the season toward the end of the first half. The Loggers attempted to clear the ball, but it went straight to Gusman at the top of the box who sent his shot into the right side of the net.
UPS tied the game at 1-1 a minute later as Cale Spence scored off the crossbar after gathering a pass from Ryan Smith. The Loggers struck again in the 58th minute as Marko Babiak found Sean Hamel who dribbled down the left side and won the one-on-one chance with Whitworth goalkeeper Bo Broyles.
Bautista tied the game at 2-2 four minutes later with a deep shot past the diving Loggers' goalkeeper Andrew Matheny. The senior then sent in the match-winner near the 75-minute mark, after taking the ball away from a falling UPS defender.
Whitworth and Puget Sound both took 16 shots on the game. Broyles made five saves for the Pirates, while Matheny finished with three for the Loggers.
Whitworth and UPS will play again tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
