WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Whitman scored in the 76th minute to earn the 1-0 win over visiting Whitworth in Sunday's Northwest Conference men's soccer season finale.
Just a day after a combined seven goals were scored between the Pirates and Blues, one goal proved to be enough as Whitworth (3-7-1, 3-7-1 NWC) was shut out by Whitman (6-5-1, 6-5-1) to close out the 2020-21 season. The Blues swept the Pirates, winning all four matches this year.
Whitworth and Whitman were in a scoreless draw at the half, with the Pirates holding a 7-3 shots advantage. Like Saturday's match, the Pirates continued to put shots on goal, leading to five saves in the first half by Blues' goalkeeper Matt Reich. Bo Broyles made two saves in the half for the Pirates.
The Blues did not take a shot in the second half until the 75th minute and their next shot less than a minute later was the match-winner. Riley Kraft scored the game-winner for the second day in a row to hand the Pirates the loss.
Joshua Hill played the second half in goal for the Pirates, making one save in the frame. Bernie Jones played the closing half for the Blues and finished with two saves. Whitworth led in shots (13-6), shots on goal (7-4) and corner kicks (9-1). Seven different Pirates had a shot on goal.
