Box Score 2 SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth closed its abbreviated home volleyball schedule with a split of matches against visiting Puget Sound on Saturday.
The Pirates (8-2) won the opener in five sets, but the Loggers (5-7) took the nightcap in four frames.
Whitworth will complete its season on February 24th at Whitman with two matches.
Match 1: Whitworth 3, Puget Sound 2
The Pirates won the opener 25-16, 23-25, 25-14, 23-25, 15-9 behind a career-high 15 kills from Jaye Hodge. Laura Stricker added seven kills and four block assists in the best match of her Whitworth career. Seventeen different Pirates played in the match as head coach Kati Bodecker went deep into the bench.
The match had a chance to end earlier than five sets, but the Loggers rallied in the second set after trailing 23-18 by scoring seven straight points.
Whitworth rallied from an 18-13 deficit in the fourth set to get within 22-21 on a kill by Hodge and a UPS attack error.
The final frame was tied 7-7 before the Pirates closed with an 8-2 run. Hodge had three straight kills down the stretch for the Bucs.
Samantha Johnson led the Loggers with 11 kills.
Match 2: Puget Sound 3, Whitworth 1
The Loggers built momentum throughout the last two sets to come away with a 25-16, 22-25, 25-15, 25-12 victory and avoid a season sweep at the hands of Whitworth.
Jordan Holman led Puget Sound with 19.5 points, including 16 kills and three service aces. Katherine Carley added 15 points (11 kills, 1 solo and 6 block assists), while Alli Reviglio had 14 points (11 kills, 2 aces, 1 block).
Puget Sound was nearly unstoppable offensively, hitting .340 as a team. They also had nine team blocks to only five for the Pirates.
Maddie Lee led all players with 19 points, including 16 kills and two aces, for Whitworth. No other Pirate reached double figures in kills or points. The Pirates hit .176 as a team.
