PLU Tops Pirate Men, 2-0

PARKLAND, Wash. – Pacific Lutheran opened the weekend with a 2-0 win over visiting Whitworth in Saturday afternoon's Northwest Conference men's soccer match.

Pacific Lutheran (5-2, 5-2 NWC) is now on a four-match winning streak, earning the shutout in its last three games. Whitworth drops to 2-4-1 on the year with the loss.

Archie Caldwell gave the Lutes the 1-0 lead in the 21st minute with an assist from Dane Helle.

Victor Loyola and Ethan Kem each had a shot on goal toward the end of the half, but PLU goalkeeper Nicholas Gaston made the saves.            

Bo Broyles saved three second-half shots taken by Keeton Heggerness before the Lutes doubled their lead in the 69th minute. Helle scored the goal for his second of the season against the Pirates.

The Pirates did not have a shot on goal in the second half.

PLU finished with the lead in shots (20-9) and shots on goal (9-3), but Whitworth had a 6-5 edge in corner kicks. Heggerness and Helle combined for 13 of the Lutes' 20 shots, seven on goal.

Broyles finished with a season-high seven saves for the Pirates, while Gaston totaled three for the Lutes.

Whitworth and Pacific Lutheran play again tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
