SPOKANE, Wash. – Maddie Lee and Kaity Barr led Whitworth to a sweep of visiting Puget Sound on Friday night in the first of three Northwest Conference volleyball matches between the schools this weekend.

The Pirates (7-1) hit .326 as a team to win 25-21, 25-19, 25-14.  The Loggers' (4-6) three-match winning streak came to an end.  The teams will meet again in the Whitworth Fieldhouse on Saturday at 10:00 am and at 5:00 pm.

The opening set was the closest.  After Whitworth took a 17-12 lead on a kill by Barr, Puget Sound rallied back to within 21-20 on Alli Reviglio's kill.  The Pirates outscored UPS 4-1 down the stretch, including a kill by Jaye Hodge and an ace by Kaitlyn White.

The second set was close until the end.  Puget Sound's block of Lee tied the set 17-17 and forced a Pirate timeout.  The set was tied again at 18-18 before Whitworth closed on a 7-1 run.  Barr had a kill and served three aces in the run.

The Pirates dominated the final frame, hitting .522 as a team without an error while holding Puget Sound to a .062 hitting percentage.

Lee finished with 13.0 points, including 12 kills (.357 hitting percentage) and two block assists.  Barr had six kills, three aces and 2.5 blocks for her 11.5 points.  Abby Wolverton added eight kills for the Bucs, while Joelle Forbes and Saylor Anderson combined for 36 assists. 

Melani Siacotos led Puget Sound with seven kills, while Reviglio and Jordan Holman had six apiece.

Saturday's 10:00 am match is a makeup from a contest originally scheduled for February 13 in Tacoma that was cancelled because of severe weather.
