SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitman College scored a pair of goals less than two minutes apart to earn the 2-0 win over Whitworth in Sunday's Northwest Conference men's soccer match.
Whitman wins its third straight match, improving the 3-1 on the season. Whitworth drops to 1-3 on the year with the loss.
Joshua Hill came into the game 25 minutes in, replacing Jamison Gunhus after an injury. The first-year goalkeeper made a save ten minutes later on a hard-struck shot from Whitman's Edwin Romero. Romero finished with seven shots on the day.
The teams went into the break tied at 0-0 with the Blues holding a 9-4 shots advantage.
Just over a minute separated the Blues' second half goals. McCoy Hennes scored the first in the 52nd minute, shortly after a pair of yellow cards on the Pirates. Jacob Barsher then found Asher Bachtold for the 2-0 Whitman lead.
Cameron Gardner attempted the Pirates only shot on goal of the second half, but Blues' goalkeeper Bernie Jones was there to make the 83rd-minute save.
Whitman led in shots (18-5) and shots on goal (6-2). Matt Reich and Jones split time in goal for the Blues, finishing with one save each. Hill finished with three saves in his Whitworth debut.
Whitworth will look to bounce back next weekend as the Pirates host Puget Sound to close out their home schedule.
