Bucs Drop Match to Blues, 3-2

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth University men's soccer team came up short on Saturday afternoon, falling 3-2 to visiting Whitman College in Northwest Conference action.

Dominic Gusman scored his second goal in as many games for the Pirates as Whitworth dropped to 1-2 on the year. Whitman improved to 2-1 on the season with the win.

Edwin Romero scored two goals for the Blues, both in the first half. The first came on a penalty kick four minutes into the match. Romero doubled the Blues' lead in the 16th minute with an assist from Oscar Harding.

Gusman scored for the Pirates in the 48th minute to narrow the margin to 2-1. However, Whitman answered back with another goal five minutes later from Derivan Dockter.

Scott Penner kept Whitworth within reach, sending in a shot off a corner kick taken by Johnathan Guglielmetti at the 76-minute mark. Down by one, the Pirates attempted two more shots through the remainder of the match but couldn't get another on target.

Whitman finished with the lead in shots (9-7), shots on goal (8-4) and corner kicks (5-3). Jamison Gunhus finished with five saves for the Pirates. Matt Reich totaled two for the Blues.

Whitworth and Whitman will finish the weekend series tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. in the Pine Bowl.
